Resolution

Resolutions are made to break. This fact is known to every creature, belongs to Homo Sapiens species. Still people like to make resolutions at high rate and keep breaking at even higher rate.

Phenomena of making new resolutions is catalyzed by another person's resolution. My roommate Sharaf made few resolutions in last few months and completed successfully(as he told me).

Personally I don't like to make resolutions since I can not keep them for long. If I make one, I deliberately make it close-ended. Like I will not eat chicken in next 48 hours.

I am making little serious and sincere resolution this time, I will post blog at least once in a week. When a celebrity like Amitabh Bachchan can write one blog per day with sheer consistency, Why can't I. So, its decided, Irrespective of whether I have some topic or not, I will write something. Hopefully I will continue......

Karachi se log....

Someone forwarded this video to me. Have a look at it, its really hilarious. You will surely have a smile on your face after watching this video. One pakistani reporter is trying to cover news that people from Karachi are going to their native place to celebrate Eid. He struggles with one sentence numerous times and gradually gets frustrated with people disturbance and starts abusing them. Don't fail to catch the accent in which he says the last word. "Karachi".

Lets see how good are you with this sentence :)

कराची से लोग अपनों में ईद मनाने के लिए अन्दरुने मुल्क जा रहे हैं. कैमरा मैन कामिल हुजूम के साथ चाँदनवाब, इंडस न्यूज़, कराची!

Ping Pong

Few weeks back, A team outing was planned to play Ping Pong. By name it may sound like some childish game, but it is another name of Table Tennis in United States. Usually like any other sport, I was excited towards playing. But the reality was, last time when I had TT bat in my hand was around 8 years ago. This event gave me chance to reminisce about my past TT affair.

There was no infrastructure for TT(read any sport except cricket which we played after bunking classes) till 12th class. In first year of engineering college, when we were sealed in Tagore Hostel, we had nothing but two TT Tables in hostel common room. Looking at few guys' amazing TT skills, I was intrigued towards this game.

Getting chance to play, is almost negligible considering number of people vs two TT tables. Luckily My roommate was selected as Common Room in-charge. As a result, he had common room key in his possession. We determined 3:00 AM to 4:00 AM timing to play, when no one is around. Though officially common room closing time was 11 PM, We used to take keys from his drawer and enjoy few hours of TT undisturbed. My skill level in TT improved from novice to average. :)

Next year, common room was far from my room and we did not have keys, so slowly I lost interest in TT. Also I spent more time in playing cricket. Last time I played TT is sometime in second year 2001 or 2002.

Back to outing, 4 tables were reserved in New York Ping Pong Association. I played my first match with a guy named Bruce. He was good at spinning the ball. I was playing after 8 years so I was finding it difficult to control the ball. He was leading 15-9 or something, but I came back and won that game. After that I won 5 out of 5 games. Quality of opposition was not excellent but not too bad either. Mohammad was best player out there, but somehow I won 2 matches against him. Score line was 21-19 for both. Usually I play better in tight situations.

It was a nice outing. Thanks to Nadeem. It reminded me about my TT passion in my college first year. Someone else was selected winner. But that was ok, since winner had to bring munchkins for everyone.

Memory Loss Trauma

I wanted to share a interesting, bizzare but scary incident. It happened in December 2007. So let me remember it and jot down.

On a chilling day, I was doing ice skating in the ice rink right in front of my apartment. I was able to do moderate level of skating. I was enjoying it but suddenly something happened. I am not sure what.......then...

... I felt myself lying on a bed. No signs of skating what so ever.It must be a dream, I thought. Smiling on my ability to see different kind of dreams, I lifted my hand to check time in my wrist watch. I was perplexed to see a band printed "Newport Skates" around my wrist. Was it dream or I really went for skating?

To know the reality, I tried to visualize the rink where I was skating in the "dream". There is no ice skating rink in front of my apartment. There is one, known as Newport Skates, which is at least 500 meters away. But if I went to newport skates, why I was seeing a new skating rink in front of my apartment. Was it real, dream or both?

I forced myself to remember what had happened. The latest memory I could recollect was, myself returning from office on 26th December. In my attempt to see the time, I observed my watch is showing date as 29th December. It created more confusion, more twist. If Todays is 29th Dec, where were the last 3 days. I tried hard to recollect, where were I and what I had been doing in last 3 days but failed in every attempt. Now I was almost awake and found out that this is not my room. It was utterly strange.

After few minutes, I realized that it was Rahul's house. I heard few people talking. It was Arati, Rahul and Balasaheb. Arati was describing something to rahul. I overheard "he fell on his face and although he seems to be little affected physically, he forgot today's date and the events which had happened today". Certainly they were talking about me. There were some scratches on left side of my face. After learning that I realized, Indeed I went to skate and plunged there and it affected my memory.

Dread of losing my memory, I started recollecting all about myself. After few minutes of endeavor, I realized it seems to be some sort of short term memory loss. All of my long term memories like my name and all were intact but only last few days were gone.

I sat down on the bed. My head was feeling heavy as if my head was hit by something very hard. Besides that I was not feeling much pain. To add more drama, I did not have medical insurance at that time. So I could not go to doctor. Rahul's wife Amarja knew about ayurvedic and she did some kind of treatment.Everyone suggest rightly that I should sleep in Rahul's place only. Everyone went to sleep but I was struggling to remember the "missing" last three days.

I got up around 10 AM next morning. Head was still heavy but definitely better. First thing I tried is what I was doing almost whole night. Eventually I succeeded. Nothing notable happened on Dec 27th and 28th, just routine. On Dec 29th evening, I went to ice skating with Arati and Balasaheb. I was skating in Newport Skates and next thing I could remember is myself lying at Rahul's place. Still around 8 hours were missing.

I recovered in next few days; Everyone, who learned about this, felt that I was extremely lucky. It could have been far more worse. Still today, that 8 hour segment of memory is missing, how did I fall while skating, how I reached Rahul's home and what happened in between.

I learned from others, who were with me, at that time about those 8 hours. I will write some other time about those. I would like to thank everyone who helped me that night. Rahul, Amarja, Arati, Balasaheb, Meena, Sharaf, Sudhakar.

A Dream finally achieved.

People, who know me, are aware that Cricket has always been integral part of my life. Soon after joining Cognizant, I endeavored to join its cricket team. I started attending the practice session in October 2004. I still remember how I and Ramraj (my roommate) used to go to practice session. Practice ground was around 25 km away from our place. We had to take bus and then auto and then walk for some time to reach to ground. We were good enough and got selected into team.

As a team, we did not have much facilities at that time. There were hardly 4-5 old bats, limited number of balls, less practice hours and in the very old and low class ground. Madhav, the captain, used to carry cricket kit in his Car. Madhav, an unapproachable, strict, huge personality in first look, later I found him totally approachable. We have shared a strong relationship between us later. I may have to write another Blog about Madhav to describe him.

I was a decent batsman, but did not get place in playing 11. I used to be 12th man and carry water bottle and glucose bottle for our playing team. But I did not get disheartened and continued coming in practice session and kept waiting for my chance. Although I was not playing in the team, I always considered it my team and developed the strong, unexplainable relationship with Team and its members. The team was really good, reached in two finals, but unfortunately lost both. We got the know that Cognizant has never won a cricket tournament so far. So the obvious aim for all of us was to win a interIT cup for Cognizant.

Next season, the practice became more tough and rigorous. From 8-10 AM both Saturdays and Sundays, team has to be present in the deccan gymkhana. Before going into nets, everyone should run 4 rounds around ground. Madhav was very strict about the practice. Everyone should be regular in practice. He was in late 30s but still he was first one to reach practice ground and complete more rounds of ground than anyone else.

A typical single IT professional spends 10-11 hours of its weekday in office, and looks for weekends to do some partying late night, to sleep till late morning, to roam around with girlfriend. We have no option but forget all these activities at least for 6 months since we have to reach practice ground at 7 AM every Saturday and Sunday. This was not forced but chosen not only by me but many more team members to win a tournament for Cognizant and Madhav.

The new team took some time to settle down and one bad day in quarters threw us out from the first tournament. Then we did go to Hydrabad Cricnizant but were behind in net run rate hence not qualified for the semis. Last tournament was MKM and it was our last chance for that year. I was permanent member of team this year and scoring consistently. Our team did perform well and won semis.

Stage was set, 18th Apr 2006, third final in the second year, this time against IBM. I did all my superstitious activities, most of them are trivial but I followed all, like I decided not to wear cap in whole match. I was on the field more than 47 overs out of 50 overs, scored a fifty. At one point of time, we were only one run away from victory. Yet again the glory eluded us . The Match was tied and IBM was declared winner. I was awarded the best batsman in that tournament, it did not matter . The final was lost. The season ended with disappointment... again.

Next season arrived, toughest of all. Getting up early is almost next to impossible task for me, on top of that every weekend. But cricket can force me to do anything and everything. It may sound unbelievable to many but I got up 5:30 AM in morning every Saturday and Sunday from Sep 1st 2006 to March 9th 2007 barring one or two occasion. I was not only one who was doing it. The whole team was doing the same. Madhav quit smoking which he was doing since last 21 years to be more fit.

This time around we got a very strong team, arguably best team ever played for cognizant. Cricnizant was scheduled in Kolkata in Nov and we increased the practice frequency to daily in October. Everyday getting up at 5:30 AM and going to practice ground and then practice from 6:30-8:30 and then come back and get ready and go to office, That was my schedule. Those days my project was also having tough days and I used to come back 1-2 AM from office. Personally those days was very difficult for me but I continued to practice to win a tournament. This rest less practice resulted pain in my shin bones and right knee. Right knee was always doggy since I had an accident. I used to take pain killers before playing the match.

One bad match and we lost the cricnizant Kolkata . We had a very good team and did lots of preparation, still lost it and then we lost our match against Kanbay in AJ tournament too. Both losses affected our team a lot. Madhav called for a team dinner and he gave us confidence and said I still believe this team is best team and we can still win the Ankur Joglekar Tournament.

Co-incidentally the same day my manager asked me to travel for a onsite engagement. As you know every software professional has a strong desire to travel to Onsite as soon as possible. I discussed this with Madhav and he suggested that I should go. But after what had happened in dinner party, I decided against going to onsite. (I have told this to very few till now, It might sound very foolish not to go onsite just for sake of playing cricket.) I wanted to win a tournament for Madhav.

The very next day, I told my manager that I can not go to onsite for personal reasons which I can not reveal. They tried very hard to persuade me, as I was only Visa holder in the team but could not succeed. Back to AJ tournament, we won the next match and team was back in track. Tech Mahindra was against us in quarters. Tech Mahindra was our arch rivals. Madhav told before the match, he is going to target TM's captain. Madhav scored 50 in that match, he has taken apart of Sacheen's bowling and fortunately I was on non striker end to see the this brutal hitting. We won the match comfortably. I can not resist myself to write that I also scored 50 in that match. :)

The whole week before the semis and final, I was feeling that now we are very close and this time we should not falter. My pail killer strength was also increased from 250 mg to 800 mg. Now semis against HSBC, a strong team, but somewhere in my back of mind, I was confidant that we will win. The reason was we never lost in semis before. Semifinal was Saumyang's match, he scored 92 of some 60-70 ball with 6-7 towering sixes. We scored around 220 in 20 overs and it ended up one sided match.

11th Feb 2007: The Final frontier, against Kanbay. We had lost a match against them already in league stage. . DC was also present in the match to boost our confidence. We did all superstition that we can think of for finals. Few of my superstitions : To wear exactly same attire which I wore in semis, Same breakfast. Going to Madhav's place following the same path which was followed yesterday (in semis). Sit on left side on the Back seat of Madhav's car. Madhav followed his own superstitions. He would always have 5 persons in the car, he also follows the same path to ground and, he will bring his elder son Sai in this car to ground and for the toss as well.

We were batting first. I got out at 4 runs :(. But Amod and Saumyang added around 100 runs for the 2nd wicket. We were set for more than 200 runs at one time but lost the plot in the middle and but we got the score of 186 thanks to to some hitting in last few overs.

Kanbay lost the 4 wickets quickly and we were on top. But in 5th pair stayed and slowly threatened to take game away from us. Shortly their score was around 100 and our middle over bowling seemed ineffective. We needed a breakthrough and it was provided timely by Utkarsh, unusually by his fielding. He fired a throw from thirdman right over the stumps, I had to just collect the ball and dislodge the bails. I looked towards umpire and his finger rose slowly. We knew now the game is ours. Slowly we were on top and by the time Madhav was going to bowl the last ball of the match they were 9 down and needed a 39 runs. I asked all players to come in slips and we had 9 slips. Still the Madhav got the last man caught in slips. Finally we won after 3 years.

I ran towards the stumps and took the middle one in my hand. We took a winning photograph, did a long celebration in pavilion, poured water on others in absence of champagne. We went to prize ceremony that very night, had a grand dinner. I came back to bed, I was tired but satisfied, The Dream was finally achieved.

I traveled New York next month and I am here since then. But I still miss those days and I am sure everyone in the team must be missing like me.

Blog on Blogs

Since past 3-4 months I was thinking a new topic to write a Blog, but I was not able to succeed in finding a appropriate, interesting topic to write a Blog. Finding a good topic to write Blog seems to be very difficult task for me. So ultimately I decided to write a blog on Blogs :).

Blog means a chronological log published on a web page. It is first recorded in 1999 and is contraction of "Web Log". Blog in already added in all dictionaries as a verb.A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs. It is similar to online diaries where people can write their views, observations, thoughts, feelings and many more ... It supposed to reflect the personality of the Blogger.

Blogger is the person who writes the Blog. Blogs are getting more popular day by day these days. As of 2007, there were total 112 million blogs are listed. There are many sites that hosts blogs. This is the list of Top 50 website which hosts Blogs. People uses blogs to share their thoughts, information, some very good links. I am personally getting very much help from blogs since I am getting live streaming links of the matches on Blogs.

Few terminology about the Blogs.
  • vlog (also called a video-blog) - a blog with video footage: this word's given rise to vlogger and vlogging.
  • blogroll - a part of a blog listing links to other blogs. Another word formed humorously from blog and roll (in the sense 'a list'), with the punning similarity to bogroll (toilet roll).
  • phlog (shortened from and also called a photoblog) - a blog which includes photos, often those taken by a mobile phone. Phlog is also used to describe a blog which can be updated via a mobile phone using SMS or MMS. This kind of phlog is also known as a moblog.
This blogs is not intended to provide you any information about blogs. Its just a try to break shackles of not writing blogs. Now i have decided to write blogs regularly. I hope I can continue it.

How I got my first job

In the end of my college IIIrd year, I was pretty sure that somewhere till the december i will get my job and i was also confident that i will not be able to get through in the first 10-15 companies as well. Reason being there were quite a few people having more percentage than me and most of them were preparing for interviews quite hard. There was one big drawback and big advantage in me. Biggest drawback was in me was I had a very very bad communication skill and Biggest advantage is my ability in aptitude tests are excepionally well. In a nutshell, I was prepared myself that not being disappointed if i am not getting job in first few months.

We used to go seniors also, sir how did you cross the XYZ comp interview, most of them response is Its quite easy since its depends on your luck and preformance on that day. I used to think about my them are "Hawa de rahe hain since unka ho gaya hain. Itna easy kaise ho sakta hia interview cross karna."

The first company in my collage was TCS. Before TCS there were few rumors that they will have four sections, and language sections is taken from the Barrens. I was really really bad in vocab. So first time in my life i doubted my self that whether i can cross the aptitude test or not. So I called at my home and cleared that TCS is coming and i will not be able to go through the exam.

Finally the test day camee, When i saw the test , I feel it was quite easy. Now i gained my confidence back. I cleared the exam quite easily. But the major bottleneck was there "Interview". Where due to my communication problem, I can not even make any person understand what I m trying to communicate. So due to obvious reason i could not make through the interviews.

When I came out of the TCS interview, I felt so depressed that I missed a job by very narrow margin. As I stated earlier, I was really sure that i dont have a chance to get in the first 10 comps. but i was really disappointed since It was so close to me. 60 people were selected in TCS from my batch.

The second comp was CTS. Criteria for appearing in CTS campus was 60% in each of semester. The 3rd Sem (we call it black semester) I got minimum in 60.4%. So somehow i fit into the criteria. In the preplacement talk, they talked about so many things.. the only things i heard is the package will be 2.11 lpa and everything will be in hand. I was really exicted to hear the package... all in hand means (17500 rs per month).

Then the apptitude test started, some 60 question in 60 minutes.. I did well and got through aptitude.. that was expected. Now interview was on next day 10:30 AM. I was really annonyed to myself that why i did not enhance my comunication skill. I studied some things about power systems because i used to pretend that power systems is my area of interest actually it was easiest subject in electrical engineering.

Next day, I reached placement center at 9:00 AM. I was given some form, which i need to fill before interview. It has some question like what is your short term goal, long term goal. Achievements, strengths weakness. To be honesh, i was not sure what is my short term goal and long team goal. I asked some of my friends, they suggested me some idea and I filled the form. In my weakness, I clearly wrote that my communicaton skills are not good.

Now Interview time came, I was very very nervous. Interviewer even did not look at my resume and even marksheet and certificates. He took the form and started having a look at it. Then he saw my achivements which is nowhere near to what a studious person should have. My achievements were man of the tournament in the college level cricket tournament. His first sentence was "So you play cricket" now tell me How does a ball swing. The only thing ever i felt confident about is cricket. I answered that. Now he started asking more question realted to cricket. Because of that I gained some confidence.

After 10 mins of cricket discussion, he asked about my area of interest that. "Power System" I said. becuse that is only topic in Electrical Engg in which I knew some thing. I am not sure what is the reason i was able to give answer of most of his questions may be becuase of fortune or becuase of i gained some confidence. After few more minutes, he asked me if your communications skills is not good what are you doing to overcome this... I replied which was a complete lie, I have joined the Soft Skill training so in next few months I will improve my communication skill. The truth was Soft Skill course has happened 2-3 months back, I did not join since it was after classroom hours and I did not want to miss cricket because of that.

I was not so sure what would be the outcome of this interview. I was little confidant since I was able to answer most of the questions but still there is always doubt. In the evening 4:00 Pm i heard taht some of the people are called for second round and I was not there in the list. I was totally down since I understood that they called only those persons who cleared the first round.

Results were supposed to come 09:00 PM in night. I was already lost hope completely so I did not go for th result declaration instead I chose to perpare for the Infosys which was coming next day. I went into Com's room (Com is my friend, he was not at the hostel since he already got the job in TCS and left for his home for vacation.) and started solving Infosys old question papers.

Around 10:00 PM somebody pushed the door with a bang and broke into the room, it was Mukesh. he hugged me and said you got selected. I was shocked, I could not believe it, First job always means too much. He told he was there for the result announcements. Nitin and Manoj also got selected.

We went downstaires, i called home from the student club. Parents were also amused. When I was coming out from the SC, "Bang" somebody hit me from the back and at my back, Mayank was there, smiling. I recieved more GPLs (i can not reveals full form here, this is one of way of enjoying/celebration in my college ) from my other friends.

Next day, I collected my letter from the college and left for home. Since still there were few days left in college commencement.

So thats how I got my first job. Now I feel getting job in college is really easy and outside college is too tough.
